Jane Sweeney

Jane Schexnyder Sweeney Rayne, LA - Jane Schexnyder Sweeney, age 91, passed away on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013. She was a native of Welsh,LA and a longtime resident of Rayne and Lafayette, LA. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery #2. She is survived by her five daughters: Sandra McGrath & husband Michael, Maureen Doerle & husband David, Meg Ruch & husband Dave, Dr. Sara Sweeney & husband Dr. James Smeltzer and Roberta Motley; her three sons: Tim Sweeney & wife Beverley, Tom Sweeney and John Terence Sweeney & wife Mary; her sister, Joyce Morphy; 13 Grandchildren- Leah McGrath, Brian McGrath & wife Laura, Amy Provost & husband Roy, Elliott Doerle & wife Kim, Briana Smeltzer, J.B. Motley, Nash Motley, Naomi Sweeney Lebouef & husband Mike, Hunter Sweeney, Grant Sweeney, Monica Sweeney Broussard & husband Lucas, Sean Sweeney, & Erin Sweeney and 9 Great Grandchildren- Spencer McGrath, Gabbie McGrath, Gavin McGrath, Charlie Sapienza, Kristin Sapienza, Jake Provost, Owen Doerle, Miles Doerle, & Miles Motley. She was preceded in death by husband, B.N.(Bert) Sweeney, Jr., her parents Leo V. and Elita Credeur Schexnyder, her aunt Eula Credeur, and two brothers, Roy Schexnyder and Gardner Schexnyder. Jane was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as the President of the District & District Head, the Rayne Garden Club as the past president & past district director, and the Louisiana Garden Club Federation. She was a Master Judge of Flower Shows, Master Landscape Design critic and served on the state council. She also served as president of the Louisiana council of Judges, Louisiana Garden Club State Council, State Clean City Chairman, Deep South Chairmanship of Clean City and was a member of the singing group Sweet Adelines for 15 years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Friday, November 15, 2013 from 8:00 am until 10:30 am at Gossen Funeral Home, Inc., Rayne, LA. A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2013. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Internment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery #2. The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of Courtyard Nursing Center and to Hospice of Acadiana for their care during her last days. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Rayne Catholic Elementary School or Hospice of Acadiana.
